The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office and Hardeeville Police Department are still searching for a man they say wrecked a stolen minivan Monday morning and escaped on foot on U.S. 278 near Sun City.
A Sheriff's Office news release Monday evening said investigators believe the man stole a yellow pickup truck in Sun City that was later found unoccupied on Oakview Road on Hilton Head Island.
Officers have established a perimeter in the area. Residents can expect a heavy law enforcement presence, the release said.
The Sheriff’s Office described the suspect as an African American male, tall, slender build, wearing red shorts and no shirt.
The truck was reported stolen Monday afternoon, the release said. Bluffton police saw it on S.C. 170 near Bluffton Parkway and attempted a traffic stop.
“The driver of the pickup truck sped up on Bluffton Parkway causing a danger to the public, so the pursuit was promptly terminated,” the release said.
Hardeeville police attempted to stop the minivan on U.S. 278 at about 11:30 a.m. The driver did not stop and a pursuit ensued.
The minivan struck a vehicle as the pursuit moved into Beaufort County. The suspect drove off the roadway into a wooded area near Sun City and fled on foot into the woods. A perimeter was established and K-9 units responded to the scene.
The woman driving the vehicle that was struck by the minivan sustained minor injuries. She was reated at the scene.
A male passenger who remained in the minivan was interviewed by investigators.
The Sheriff's Office said the minivan was reported stolen Sunday at Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island. It is being processed for evidence.
