Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority (BJWSA) works hard to make sure that you are provided with the safest, highest quality drinking water. Occasionally, the water may appear discolored, and our customers want to know why.
There are a lot of reasons that your drinking water may appear discolored. The reasons usually range from naturally occurring seasonal changes to maintenance being performed in your neighborhood.
During certain times of the year, conditions change in the Savannah River that cause substances such as manganese or iron to increase in this water. The water remains safe to drink after BJWSA has treated it, but our customers sometimes notice a “yellow,” “reddish,” or “orange” tint in the water. Once we are aware of the problem, we work hard to fix it and minimize any discoloration.
Discoloration may also be caused by maintenance in your neighborhood, such as routine line flushing. In this case, the water is still safe to drink, and you can usually eliminate the color by flushing your internal plumbing for a few minutes.
Another possible source of discoloration could be older, galvanized metal pipes—waterlines, the service from the line to your home, or in your household plumbing. This may cause a “reddish” tint to the water, and can also often be eliminated by flushing. In areas where BJWSA owns these older pipes, we are working to eventually replace them with a more modern plastic material.
